1974 Moto Guzzi Eldorado Project Bike
This 1974 Eldorado was resurrected over the winter of 2005/2006 after having been stripped down for parts and scattered about 10 years ago. I refer to the project as a resurrection rather than a restoration because several upgrades and modifications were made during the process, and it is not exactly the same as it was originally issued from the factory. Instead, I made changes that suit my personal preferences, while still maintaining most of that which makes the bike an Eldorado. Quite a few of the old pieces (which are no longer in production) were pulled from my personal parts stash, which I had accumulated over the years. Almost all of the new parts can be purchased right here at MG Cycle. Several other old items were sourced from friends and "won" on ebay. If you are an ebay seller, you might see some of your old parts here.
This particular bike (VIN 61157, see http://www.thisoldtractor.com/gtbender/loopframe_loop_list.htm for reference) was built in September 1973 for the 1974 model year. As such, it originally had a 4 shoe front brake. I prefer disk brakes when I can get them. Later in 1974 the Eldorado was equipped from the factory with a single disk brake, so I went one step further and was able to gather enough pieces to convert this bike to a dual disk front brake. It was a fairly simple conversion, but does rely on several difficult to obtain old pieces that you just can't buy new anymore, and a few fabrication skills.
Here's a list of modifications made to this particular machine:
Ikon 76101429 shock absorbers
Longer SP1000 type fork dampers with corresponding Wirth progressive rate fork springs
(the above two items increase the ride height, increase the suspension travel, and increase cornering clearance.)
Gilardoni 88mm cylinders and pistons, with rocker arms, push rods and tappets from a post 1975 model
(making 949cc; the rocker arms from later models are a better fit to the push rod tunnels in the new cylinders)
Full stainless steel exhaust with Mistral mufflers and crossover
(very nice mufflers made specifically for V700/Amb/Eld, design pays homage to the cigar shape of the original mufflers and uses the same crossover as original for better performance)
Replica of original Moto Guzzi police fairing
(excellent wind protection, nice quiet pocket, even for your hands)
Brembo F08 calipers and 300mm cast iron brake disks with OEM master cylinder
(amazing how well these systems perform when all components are in good working order!)
Somewhat period correct, unknown brand, large volume, kinda weather tight ebay sourced saddlebags
(mounted on NOS (and NLA) factory bag mounts. not exactly the best looking bags, but very functional)
Nolan/Field alternator
(light weight, simple, good output, http://www.thisoldtractor.com/gtbender/loopframe_electrical.htm )
Rear wheel & brake from an 850T
(there's a rubber cush drive in these wheels for smooth power delivery and management of driveline shocks)
Black and white seat as used on 850GT California
( No Longer Available (NLA), one day these will be reproduced)
Big blinkers and extra tail lights from the Pilot truckstop
(chrome plated, for $12 to $15 a piece they're hard to beat)
Bosch H4 motorcycle specific halogen headlight
(throws a nice beam, the entire wiring harness was custom made to utilize relays and maximize electrical delivery)
Tomasselli Daytona 2C throttle with T3 Police throttle cables
(this simple upgrade simplifies your life - easier to change cables, easier to synchronize carbs, easier to twist the throttle, easier to find replacement grips and cables, etc)
Plus many more, too many to list!
